Ladybird Training, Baucau, September 2004

As part of a strategy to combat the widespread Coconut Scale pest in the Baucau region, Integrated Pest Management advisor Dr. Mark Ritchie, and his national counterpart, Mr. Americo Brito, organized a workshop to train agricultural extension workers how to introduce ladybirds - a natural predator - into the environment.

PowerPoint is a useful tool for learning and training of trainers.

A closer examination of the real-live pest reinforces the knowledge gained.

Integrated Pest Management advisor Dr. Ritchie helped to organize the workshop.

In the field, Mr. Brito (Dr. Ritchie's national counterpart) helps an extension worker to collect ladybirds for later release in a new area.

Once caught, the ladybird is transferred for storage in a pooter.

Course participants view cages in which ladybirds are reared.

The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates of completion, presented by Mr. Abilieu Hornai, Agricultural Coordinator for Baucau.
