East Timor has a very fragile environment. In rural areas unsustainable farming practices have contributed to a rapid deterioration of the land. In urban centers pollution is one of the biggest challenges. UNDP is supporting communities, NGOs and the Transitional Administration to prioritize and meet East Timor’s Environmental concerns.

  • There is little or no remaining primary forest in East Timor.
  • The population of Dili District is five times greater than any other districts in East Timor, leading to significant pressures on the urban environment.
  • Coral reef in East Timor is at significant risk from environmental pollution, siltation and the use of explosives in fishing.

Environmental issues not only affects farmers. Keeping the coast line clean is important to the livelihood of the fishermen of East Timor

Defining Environmental Issues and Priorities – (Fact Sheet) With support from the Norwegian Government, UNDP has launched a broad-based consultative process in an attempt to identify the environmental needs and priorities of East Timor.
